The literature offers numerous so-called long-term studies evaluating the outcomes of
fixed implant-supported restorations. However, the follow-up period in most of these
studies is less than ten years. Scientific evidence from studies with follow-up periods
exceeding ten years and including a sufficiently large number of subjects remains
limited. Furthermore, the criteria used to define treatment success vary considerably
among studies. Depending on the study design, the reported outcomes may focus on
the performance of the suprastructure material, long-term functional stability, biological
stability, or aesthetic outcomes.
Because scientific studies with follow-up periods exceeding 20 years are scarce, the
assessment of very long-term outcomes is largely based on case reports and clinical
experience.
During this presentation we will discuss the key factors that are crucial for the long-term
success of implant-supported restorations. Using clinical case examples, it will also
illustrate both the possibilities and the limitations of such treatment.
